Jimmy Iovine in 2012

Jimmy Iovine is an American music producer, record executive, and entrepreneur, best known as the co-founder of Interscope Records, a key label in the success of Eminem, Dr. Dre, and many other major artists. He has been one of the most powerful and influential figures in the music industry since the 1980s.

He played a pivotal role in launching and supporting the careers of major artists including Dr. Dre, Tupac Shakur, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, Lady Gaga, 50 Cent, and Eminem, the latter of whom became one of the most commercially successful and controversial rappers of all time under the joint Shady/Aftermath/Interscope label group. In 2006, Iovine co-founded Beats by Dre with Dr. Dre, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon and was later sold to Apple Inc. for $3 billion, leading Iovine to take a major executive role at the company. His career has been widely documented and celebrated, most notably in the Emmy-nominated HBO docuseries The Defiant Ones (2017), which chronicles his partnership with Dr. Dre and his broader impact on the music industry.

Founding Interscope Records[]

In 1990, Iovine co-founded Interscope Records, a label that quickly gained notoriety for signing bold, innovative, and often controversial artists. Interscope became the home of acts like Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, and Tupac Shakur, and later formed a critical partnership with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment.

One of Iovine's most significant contributions to modern music came in 1998, when he backed Dr. Dre in signing Eminem, a then-unknown white rapper from Detroit. Iovine supported the release of The Slim Shady LP (1999) and stood behind Eminem through public controversies and legal battles. The commercial success of Eminem helped solidify Interscope's dominance in the music industry.

Iovine also helped launch 50 Cent, The Game, and G-Unit through his leadership at Interscope, overseeing one of the most successful eras in hip-hop history.
